Defining feature(s): The bright neck ring, orange or yellow ventral scales and slate gray/blue gray, smooth dorsal scales are the key identification features of this species.
Other features: Ring-neck snakes are slender snakes with a small head that is about the same width as their neck.
Habitat: Ring-neck snakes are found in forests where the hide under rocks, logs and leaf litter during the day. They may also be found in fields and open areas close to woodlands and in and around rocky outcrops and alvars.
Reproduction: Mating happens in the spring, late summer or fall. Fall mating results in sperm retention and delayed fertilization until spring. In late June or July, Females lay 3-6 oblong eggs in warm moist logs, under rocks or in rodent burrows. Hatching occurs anywhere from 30 to 60 days.
