Amphibians and reptiles represent a significant proportion of Ontario's protected species. On a global scale, their status and conservation is a high priority. Their sensitivity to disturbance, specialized ecological needs, and diverse ecological roles make them excellent candidates for monitoring ecosystem health. However, the monitoring programs currently in place may be improved greatly through slight changes in protocol. This course will provide both theoretical and practical knowledge for those who are or will be involved in monitoring amphibians and reptiles. A problem-based approach will be used to describe the best monitoring methods to be used in light of the question to be answered, available resources, and the species to be studied. Participants will be engaged in classroom discussion and practical exercises to ensure a good understanding of relevant monitoring methods.

Monitoring Amphibians & Reptiles is a two-day course (12 hours) that will provide knowledge and specific skills used in a variety of careers. This course will provide fundamental knowledge of methods and tools used to monitor amphibians and reptiles with a focus on providing a clear understanding of detection and monitoring techniques for these often cryptic species.

You can enroll in this course through Sir Sandford Fleming College's, Frost Campus, School of Continuing Education. The course is offered on campus in the spring or you can contact the school to arrange for an in house workshop. Go to Fleming
